Angina and Heart Disease

Effective treatments and prevention of heart disease

Atherosclerosis can cause narrowing of the arteries in the heart, which in turn may cause heart disease. Heart disease could be:

  • Angina, which is pain in the chest due to too little oxygen supply to the heart muscle
  • Heart attacks (myocardial infarction)
  • Heart failure, with shortness of breath and swelling of the legs

There are several types of conventional treatment which are very effective in treating heart disease. The ones commonly used include GTN sprays or tablets, beta blockers and calcium blockers. Newer types of drugs are being discovered all the time but these are usually aimed at more severe cases of the disease.

Surgery for the heart is also very effective. This could be in the form of:

  • Angioplasty, using a balloon or laser to unblock a narrow artery
  • A by-pass operation using healthy veins from the leg to by-pass the diseased arteries in the heart muscle

Apart from treatments for established heart disease, there are several approaches for preventing any problems and reducing the risk in susceptible individuals. These include the usual: take exercise, stop smoking and avoid fat. There arc also many suitable dietary and nutritional supplements available.
