Gout and Aging

What causes gout and what are the treatment available?

Of all the arthritic conditions, this traditionally is most associated with aging. The caricature of the debauched old man with an excessively painful foot, enlarged big toe, and short temper is well known. However, frugal living will not automatically protect from this very painful disorder. The joints become painful because of inflammation caused in the joint cavity by the precipitation of small crystals of uric acid. There is an accumulation of uric acid in the body and its synthesis is reduced by an enzyme-inhibiting drug known as allopurinol (Zyloric).

Pseudo-gout is a very similar condition: again, crystals form in the joints, but the mechanism is entirely unknown. The only treatment available is therefore that of symptomatic relief, so painkillers with anti-inflammatory properties are used to suppress symptoms.
