Why is it important to follow the eight simple guidelines of the American Heart Association Dietary Guidelines

  • Total fat intake should be less than 25 to 30 percent of total daily calories.
  • Saturated fat intake should be less than 7 percent of total daily calories.
  • Trans fat should be limited to less than 1 percent of total daily calories
  • Cholesterol intake should be limited to less than 300 milligrams per day.
  • Choose whole-grain, high-fiber foods and a wide variety of vegetables and fruits.
  • Consume at least two servings of fish twice a each week or more.
  • Sodium intake should be less than 2,300 milligrams per day.
  • Alcohol consumption should not exceed one drink per day for women, two for men. A drink is defined as four ounces wine, one twelve-ounce beer, one and a half ounces of 80-proof spirits, or one ounce of 100-proof spirits.
