Diet to Prevent High Blood Pressure

Maintaining normal blood pressure with a proper diet

To help maintain normal blood pressure a standard recommendation used to be to avoid excessive salt in the diet. The Western diet contains as much as 10 times more salt than the amount we actually need and it takes only a few weeks to modify our taste and enjoy low salt food. However, recent research into the effects of salt on blood pressure has given controversial results. No relationship has been found between salt consumption and blood pressure. Until the debate is over, however, it is best to avoid too much salt in the diet, or use salt substitutes. If you want to titillate your taste buds use dry herbs, red pepper or aromatic plants instead.

Garlic and calcium supplements are thought to help maintain normal blood pressure. Losing excess weight and taking regular exercise are both essential in lowering blood pressure. Food supplements in tablet form include high potency antioxidants, fish oils and magnesium.
