Natural Hormones to fight aging

Another group of phytochemicals is the phyto-oestrogens. These are generally natural hormones found most frequently in soy products, such as:

  • Soy beans
  • Tofu
  • Tempeh
  • Soy milk
  • Soy butter

Study into the effects of phyto-oestrogens signifies that these can help reduce the potential risk of breast cancer and improve menopausal symptoms. Researchers who studied the effects of soy protein in the diet discovered that it reduces hot flushes, night sweats, irritability and vaginal dryness.

Soy beans contain the phytochemical genistein (a flavonoid) which, according to some experts, can help fight cancer of the prostate and reduce the risk of thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).
Many phytochemicals, including phyto-oestrogens, are also available in tablet or powder form. Examples of products easily available in health shops are:

  • Bilberry extract
  • Grapeseed extract
  • Pycnogenol
  • Soy powder

These supplements are prepared using natural sources. They are useful because they make up for the low amount of natural anti-aging ingredients in the Western diet. However, what is natural may not necessarily be good for us, and some natural products can have side effects similar to those caused by synthetic drugs.

How to increase your intake of soy

  • When making hamburgers or other dishes requiring mince, use soy protein mixed with mince instead of mince alone.
  • Eat soy beans both dried and green, in salads.
  • Use tofu, tempeh (soy bean cake) or roasted soy nuts.
  • Use soy milk and soy flour in cooking.

It is best to avoid soy bean oil as it is too fatty and may cause indigestion.
