Mental Exercises to Fight Aging

Slowing Aging with Mental Exercises

Regular mental exercises make things happen inside us. Research evidence shows that:

  • They maximize the power of the immune system.
  • They boost morale and self-image.
  • They may help the body fight aging damage, although the actual scientific evidence for this is not very clear yet.
  • They make you confident to face old age in a positive way.
  • They reduce excessive stress and balance some of the body’s physiological functions.
  • They speed up specific cognitive functions. For example, they regulate emotions, refresh and clear the thought processes, improve the outlook and keep the intelligence in admirable shape.

Recent research points out that regular mental exercises adjust certain special chemicals in the brain, called neuropeptides. Examples of these are VIP (vasoactive intestinal peptide), substance P, GABA (gammaamino-butyric acid) and other exotically-named chemicals, all of which have the power to energize body and mind.

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly which exercise benefits which areas of the brain, so we are only going to concentrate on general mental exercises here.
