How Much Sleep is Enough

Aging and Lack of Sleep

Medical professionals advise that on average most of the people need six to eight hours of sleep every night. But not everyone gets it. Insomnia is among the most prevalent problems in the United States, and one of the very most common reasons people visit a doctor. It’s estimated that one in four American adults and one in two senior encounter occasional or recurrent sleep problems, and those statistics will continue to increase as the baby boomer generation reaches old age. Sleep disruptions – more generally known by the umbrella term “insomnia” – could be caused by a host of reasons, such as depression and chronic pain, but a hectic lifestyle is among the most common.
