Altered Bowel Habit

Why altered bowel habit must be taken seriously?

This symptom has already been mentioned above in the sections on diarrhoea and constipation. However, its importance justifies repetition. Any persistent alteration in a lifetime’s bowel habit merits reporting to the doctor. The change can be the onset of constipation, persistent diarrhoea, or alternation between constipation and looseness of the motions. Any of these symptoms may herald the presence of a serious underlying bowel problem. Early reporting and subsequent investigation will help to identify many problems at a time when curative treatment is still possible.

Although many benign conditions may present in this way, it is also a common and early form of presentation of cancer of the large bowel, and so for this reason must be taken seriously. If the change in bowel habit is also associated with the passage of blood, either fresh bright-red blood or dark altered blood, there is again the risk of an underlying malignant cause-although piles are the most common cause.
