Mindfulness Training as Mental Exercise

Mindfulness Training as Mental Exercise

For this exercise, you need to decide on a controversial subject and then argue the case opposite to your own opinion.

For example, if you support intimacy, write an essay or discuss with a partner all the disadvantages of it. Criticize it and find arguments to support the other side. You don’t have to believe in
what you say, as long as you are able to put forward an argument which is clear and makes sense.

The exercise makes you think of issues which you have hidden in some dark areas of your brain. It is spring cleaning for the brain, bringing out into the open parts of your personality which you may not be aware of.

A similar exercise involves occasionally reading a book or magazine which you don’t usually read. If you are a man, for example, have a look at a woman’s magazine every couple of months or so (some men do this every week!), if you are a pensioner, read a teenager’s magazine, and so on. Make an effort to choose something different every now and then, something that may make you see things in a different light.
